I would have agreed with you several years back, but, it's been my experience since that it doesn't happen as often as you seem to be implying. Perhaps my threshold of what's "legitimate" is higher than others. If you sign up for cheezburgertemple or "you have won a laptop", I think you get what you deserve. But I'm not seeing it. Of course, I always look in the fine print for "we don't share your address with anybody". And so far, none of them have.
