I don't know whether there are many examples or not, but ISC and
Nominum seem to add new RRtypes to BIND whenever an RFC is published
defining them, regardless of who employs the authors of the RFC.
Last I checked, variants of BIND ran a large proportion of publicly
visible DNS servers on the Internet.

So we do have at least an existence proof that there are vendors
that proactively respond to standards.  Perhaps this is a way
to differentiate themselves from other vendors that use "ignore"
to complement an "embrace-extend-extinguish" strategy, but I don't
really care why -- the fact is examples exist.

I agree that the dynamics of "build it and they will come" are not
always applicable.  But this dynamic is also not always completely
inapplicable.
