Scott, > The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has now provided > comments on this request to the FCC. The comments include the > request that the FCC mandate that ISPs, VoIP providers, and > others be able to mark and prioritize emergency traffic (or, if > they cannot prioritize, not give worse service and not destroy > the marking). > We should discuss how this relates to the mission of this > working group. its my opinion that the documents that have either been produced (rfc-3689, rfc-3690), forwarded to other groups (rfc-3487), and are in the pipeline to the iesg (draft-ietf-ieprep-framework-09.txt) from ieprep are very complimentary to the DHS comments you cite. our ieprep documents are technical in nature (as opposed to policy or regulatory) and provide additional insight and reference points to the degree that they are almost tutorial in explaining relevent protocols within the context of ETS. do the ieprep documents provide a direct 1-to-1 response to the DHS documents? no, but that is due it in part because they were written beforehand and also took pains to be more inclusive and be broader in scope given the more diverse interest and participants of the working group. be that as it may, i feel the ieprep documents i mention above can provide valuable insite and guidance to those that have a direct or indirect interest in the DHS comments. the other reason for a lack of a 1-to-1 response is that our charter is constrained to requirements & framework, and not to specific solutions. cheers, -ken ps, my apologies for not being a bit more elaborate in my response, but my left hand is in a cast for the next few weeks, and typing with just my right hand (and pain killers) is not on the top of my list of fun things to do :-)
