FYI: ITU standard addresses presentation of e-mail addresses

Recommendation ITU-T E.123 (formerly CCITT E.123) of the International
Telecommunications Union has in the past dealt only with the
presentation of telephone numbers, and is probably best known as the
document that codifies the use of the 'plus notation' for
international phone numbers, eg '+1 555 123 4567'.

However, the 02/2001 edition, retitled 'Notation for national and
international telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and Web addresses',
and which replaces the longstanding 1984 edition from the CCITT red
book, extends this to cover e-mail addresses and web site URLs.  It's
pretty minimal in the context of e-mail addresses, saying simply that
e-mail addresses should be printed in 'SMTP style' and gives the
example '[email protected]'.  It doesn't amplify what constitutes 'SMTP
style', and doesn't even reference any IETF standards (which is
presumably an oversight).

Does the IETF have a liason with the ITU, since it appears that any
form of ACE solution to IMAs is going to require modification of E.123
(assuming SMTP is going to be using ACE, and that we don't want to be
printing ACE on our business cards and letterheads...) ?

Another reason, perhaps, why the IETF needs an RFC on presentation
forms of e-mail addresses, so that future editions of E.123 can
reference it?
