I suspect it may be more annoying than with domain names, though I
have no idea whether users of these scripts would actually want
localparts ending in digits.  It's clearly not the end of the world if
it's prohibited, but I'm just not sure (at the moment) that I see the
need to prohibit it.

Of course, even though [email protected] displays unambiguously, the
localpart DEF2 by itself does not.  (2DEF would display identically
under the usual assumptions).  However, I don't see why it can't be
left up to the e-mail administrator at ABC.com to decide whether the
cost of the potential confusion is outweighed by the utility of such
identifiers.

I don't immediately see that they would be troublesome.  Generally
adjacent and separated by punctuation is no different.
