We went through a long, grueling discussion on NAPTR or not, quite some 
time back.

In the end, we decided we really didnt need most of what it could 
provide, and so we settled on the current algorithm. I am sure the 
details are somewhere in the archives.

That algorithm has the recipient place records for each IM transport 
they support. The sender then selects amongst those which are available.
