I don't believe this statement is complete accurate. While its true 
that Wireless Village received the bulk of the attention at 3GSM, I 
know for a fact there were representatives from the XMPP/Jabber camp. 
 From what I've heard, Wireless Village has more or less stalled (while 
the vendors have some incomplete implementations, there having 
difficulty selling it to the carries), and there is significant 
momentum in the XMPP arena to adapt the protocol for mobile devices. 
Its obviously impossible to declare that one protocol will become the 
defacto standard in this area, but I do think its important to realize 
that the XMPP community is actively working to support wireless 
devices, which is something the carriers would like to see.

In addition, should Wireless Village become active within some 
carriers, I have no doubt that the Jabber community will do what it has 
done many times before, and build a transport layer to bridge the two 
protocols.

 From what I've heard, the carriers are not interested in a 
wireless-only protocol, as many of them see more value if the account 
information for their customers is usable either wirelessly, or on 
their desktop.
