CONFUSION IN RING TOPOLOGY

Hi,
  I am working in a TNMS server for SDH, in that while
creating a crOss connection the options i have is,
 
 1. Bidirectional Unprotected
 2. Bidirectional Protected
 3. Unidirectional Unprotected
 4. Unidirectional HEAD
 5. UnidirectiOnal TAIL.

  The question i have is 

 1. Here which suits SNCP (SubNetwork Connection
Protocol) among this five?
 2. Till now i am assuming SNCP of SDH and UPSR of
SONET are similar, am i right?
 3. For the all the cross connections mentioned above
how MODULES/CARDS has to be utilised to achive the
protection?

   Kindly help me.
