Indeed the concept is common enough, thus my prefacing my mic comment
with "for completeness" - I wanted to point out the reverse direction.
It's the outside network (or an island) being aggregated and exposed as
a kind of virtual single node.  It makes for... let's say 'somewhere
between curious and neat' behavior with MANETs that would otherwise
split & merge when paths thin down to only via the internet (or the
island.)

(I apologize for not being able to provide more information on that
curiosity.)
