For the benefit of the uninitiated (myself, possibly others), can you explain 
what the default-to-self hack is? (Or provide a reference).

Fred Templin beat me to it, but yeah: For Linux, XDP / eBPF might provide us 
with a new avenue to handle this. Worth looking into, I think, although 
probably still not trivial.
