pim, I’m a co-author of this document and support the WGLC. The document addresses existing conflicts in the range of group IDs that RFC 3307 assigns for dynamic multicast address allocation protocols using server-based methods (such as MADCAP) and protocols using host-based (or peer-to-peer) methods. It also highlights an existing conflict with Solicited-Node multicast addresses and ensures the new allocation ranges will not overlap with this important protocol. There is currently no published standard for a host-based method. This document establishes the foundation for two new host-based methods we anticipate will be ready for WGLC soon: 1) draft-ietf-pim-ipv6-zeroconf-assignment and 2) draft-ietf-pim-gaap. Finally, Stig mentioned that there is a new Private Use range, which can be useful for deployments that prefer manual allocation, or for experimentation with new dynamic allocation protocols. Please review the draft and reply to this email (make sure the mailing list gets included) with any support or concerns you might have. In order to progress the draft we need to see that there is support in the working group. The wglc ends in 2 weeks on September 9th. You can find the draft at https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-pim-updt-ipv6-dyn-mcast-addr-grp-id/__;!!EJc4YC3iFmQ!Te3ticKKQ9UVlzcuNFmgwtX3iiDoExJ6Q68lTPX8C2hItqcKxWiMaxumRcMUC2sXHyFBJpwqXCbT9Q$<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-pim-updt-ipv6-dyn-mcast-addr-grp-id/__;!!EJc4YC3iFmQ!Te3ticKKQ9UVlzcuNFmgwtX3iiDoExJ6Q68lTPX8C2hItqcKxWiMaxumRcMUC2sXHyFBJpwqXCbT9Q$> Note that version 7 has a change related to private/manual allocation of addresses. Table 2 has a new row and some new explanation below the table. Please check whether you are ok or have concerns with this.
