I wouldn't say that. For a registry, we developed a similar extension (actually, 
it is a pseudo object) in the context of a promotion system. By using it, the 
registrar can inquire whether a given promotion code is valid as such, has been 
consumed, the validity period of the promotion, the purpose (create/renew) and 
the resulting (lowered) price. And to my knowledge, it is actually used.

The only problem I see with such an extension are promotional models of 
registries that depend on some total numbers, (e.g. you get some rebates if you 
register more than x domains/month).

Why, and what is the better way?

By the way, maybe just as an inspiration ;-) -- I once had the idea of an 
extension that allows the reporting of the "total cost of ownership" of a 
domain, i.e. the book entries of the create/transfer/renews (and maybe other 
charged operations). But for various reasons, I did not follow up that matter. 
One reason was that I don't know whether there is actually a use case for this 
on the registrar side.
