But I'm curious - why does it matter? It's not like these terms are used consistently or with precision, anyway. And somehow email has managed to work reasonably well (except for spam and spam countermeasures) for well over 30 years without this being a settled question. To me the biggest "protocol" part that is associated with *22 has to do with how an envelope is derived from a composed message. Reply processing is of course another bit of "protocol".
