That was the project that Mary referred to earlier, that never took off and an implementation issue.

The question here, in the SIMPLE wg, is not to select another protocol, it is to judge whether

* SIMPLE is broken, which we seams to reach a consensus on
* SIMPLE can be fixed, which we are still discussion

If we conclude that we have no interoperability, the SIMPLE wg hasn't lived up to the goal of the charter.

The SIMPLE-XMPP gatewaying and SIP-XMPP ("calls") gateway is a very important discussion, but 
kind of assumes that there are working SIMPLE implementations and some basic level of interoperability
so you can write a gateway to SIMPLE, not having to write a new gateway for every SIMPLE-like
implementation. For SIMPLE-XMPP to work, we need a SIMPLE world that interoperates.
