I agree, although not necessarily 'typically' and not necessarily 'in terms of other protocols'. For me, I think it is clear that the "tel:" and "fax:" URL schemes are useful, just because of the possibility of automatic dialing and interaction with fax software. I'm less sure about the utility of a postal address URL scheme, though. I can imagine snail://USA/CA/Palo%20Alto/3333%20Coyote%20Hill%20Road as the URL of my postal address, but how could it be used effectively?
