I took the original back to HMV, and they were happy to exchange it,
though they said they hadn't had any other complaints.  The replacement
still has the hole off-centre, though less noticeably so.  I haven't
(yet) had any problems with it.

It may well be just a poorly manufactured disc, or even batch of discs.
It's not beyond belief that factory checking standards could be less
stringent for novelty Xmas singles than for albums.
