I'd like to announce my release of a new version of wmacpi, based on
wmacpi-ng, which was a complete rewrite of wmacpi-1.34. I've
attempted to contact the original author of wmacpi without success,
and since there doesn't seem to be anyone else looking to take over
the package I figure I will . . .

The current Debian wmacpi package maintainer is planning on
packaging this version, as a straight replacement for the old wmacpi
1.34 package, so Debian users should look out for the new version
soon. Other distros can build from the source - if anyone wants to
contribute an rpm spec file for it I'll happily build an rpm as
well.

So, what's new with wmacpi 1.99, since version 1.34?
 * Full support for multiple batteries (up to a hard-coded maximum of
   eight). Time remaining calculations are performed based on the
   remaining charge in all batteries.
 * Time remaining is averaged over a collection of samples,
   improving the accuracy of the results - without averaging, the
   time remaining is overstated by an hour or more on my laptop.
 * Support for modern kernels (2.4.17 and greater, and 2.5/2.6).
 * Sane handling of as many b0rken laptop stupidities as possible.
   If wmacpi 1.99 does anything stupid with your laptop, please
   report it to me and I'll try and make it do something sensible.
 * Complete rewrite of the code, to clean it up and remove all the
   APM stuff and to make things saner. The diff between 1.34 and 1.99
   is almost as many lines as there are lines in all the files in
   1.99, so you can see the amount of reworking that's been done.
 * A command line tool to query battery status (also supported by
   the graphical tool, with the -w option). This isn't strictly
   necessary, since there's already a command line acpi tool by
   Grahame Bowland, but hey, I already had all the /proc/acpi
   parsing code, so it was nice and easy ;-)

There's also an active maintainer, which is a good thing given how
fickle the ACPI interfaces seem to be . . .

Once this release has been out for a bit, hopefully in use by lots
of people and with all the bugs found, I'll bump up the version
to 2.0.
