[ACPI-sppt] Graceful shutdown with ACPI

Hello,

I'm using the ACPI version that comes with 2.4.22 (20030813, I suppose), 
 and it seems like it's working just fine on my Compaq Presario 2121EA!

Now I want to be sure that the computer shuts down gracefully when the 
battery is going to die out soon.

Could anyone comment on how to do this (or if I need to do nothing)?

In particular:

(1) What happens if ACPI is in the kernel, but no daemon is activated to 
detect low battery? Will someone shut it off eventually, this way or 
another, or will the voltage slowly go down until the computer gets ill?
(2) Is there a trustful event (as in /proc/acpi/events) to tell me that 
the battery is low? If so, is it the kernel code that triggers it off, 
or is it something related to the computer (BIOS/hardware)? Does anyone 
have an example for the acpid config file?
(3) My /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info goes:

So I presume that the computer should be shut down an 300mAh, if I want 
to be a good boy. Now, I wonder: Who says this 300 mAh? Is it the 
hardware in some way?

(4) Last but not least, suppose that my kernel hangs for some reason. 
Could the computer be damaged as a result of an overheat or operation at 
low battery?

Despite my attempts to find some info on the web, I haven't found a 
guide that tells me, in concrete terms, what makes the ACPI thing tick. 
Any tips? (I've been at the regular HOWTO's and the links they offer).
