I have a R32 with a 1.7G processor. I have 2.4.21-rc2 with the 20030509
ACPI subsystem revision, and v2.08 BIOS. I do not have this issue, and the
fan spins up at about 50-55C. It usually stays running at the faster speed
for some time.

What BIOS, patches, kernel are you using?
