I have the 2.08 BIOS as well and was last using a 2.4.21-rc1 kernel with 
apropriate kernel acpi patches. I found out that windows prevents the 
'death of heat' by just putting the cpu in its slower 1200mhz speedstep 
mode (or better acpi does so as winxp doesnt even show this, i had to 
use the intel speedstep tool to see it). Maybe that is the problem...

the fan here goes on and off periodically, but at some point the system 
then goes down. I was so pleased as everything else now works with acpi...
