[ACPI-sppt] battery doesn't last as long, fan always on

Question #1:
With the 2.4.20 kernel and the 20011218 patch my fan was always
off. In Windows2000 my fan was always off. Now with the 2.4.20
patch my fan is almost always on. How can I make my laptop quiet again?

Question #2:
My battery alarm is not supported.
emmajane@debian:~$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/alarm
alarm: unsupported

I have run out of power twice since upgrading my kernel. I used to get ~3
hours of battery life. Now I only get ~2. (Maybe because the fan is always
on? I'm not sure.) What would I have to do to get the battery alarm to
work?

thanks :)
