I made the same experience with my Acer TravelMate 803LCi and ACPI-patched
2.4.21-preX kernels: sometimes the system boots and sometimes it hangs
when accessing the hardware clock.

As quick and dirty workaround I have removed the rtc module which
provides the /dev/rtc device (char-major-10-135), so that hwclock is
forced to handle the low-level access on its own. Since then, I had no
more problems.

With hindsight, I'm not sure why I didn't use the '--directisa' option
of hwclock; it probably achieves the same effect. Maybe I had a reason,
but that was two weeks ago and my memory is fading quickly :-)
