[ACPI-sppt] Preliminary ACPI Questions

Hi;

I got a new computer back in march.  It has a new intel motherboard which is leaving power management up to the operating system.

Not having installed windows on it and having installed Knoppix 3.2 4/15/2003( basically debian ) I discovered that "halt", "shutdown -r now" only deactivates the operating system.

I cannot shut my computer down.

Someone told me that I would have to install acpi by recompiling my kernel, that acpi might not be avaialble for my hardware, and that acpi is not stable.

I am a bit of a newbie so before sinking time into researching how to compile kernels I thought I would ask about the veracity of all of these claims.

Anyway, I think my machine can ACPI

Okay, firstly, can acpi for linux power my machine down?  This is my motherboard:

Motherboard:
"Intel Desktop Board D845PESV"....this is also the name of the chipset.


My bios has a menu for power features called "acpi" 
It had these options:

silent boot - enabled
intel rapid boot - enabled
scan user flash area - enabled
pxe boot to lan - disabled
usb boot - enabled
chasis intrusion - disabled. 


Secondly, if acpi supports my hardware do I have to recompile my kernel to get it?

Lastly, what is the stability like.  If it fails will it take out my machine with it?
