[ACPI-sppt] problems entering S1

I installed the latest 2.4.21 kernel, and have applied
acpi-20030619-2.4.21.diff

everything compiled fine, and

so (i think) i should be able to enter state S1 by doing

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/sleep

However, this only seems to `freeze' the system: the lights on the
front of the box (it's a desktop from timecomputers, with an award
bios) go off, and gnome's clock stops.  Pressing keys on the keyboard
restores things (except i have to change to a text console and back
before the mouse works again, and the clock continues from where it
stopped)

pressing the power button on the box does nothing at all.

Is there something else i should have done to get this to work?

I turned on verbose error reporting, and after i try to go into S1,
/var/log/messages has the following:

[i use debian stable if that helps]
