You really shouldn't install Knoppix on hard disk, especially when you are 
a
newbe, as you said. Consider getting a proper distribution like debian,
redhat or suse. Believe me, the documentation alone is work the price.

When the board has ACPI it should power down your system (although that's
only one of a hell of things ACPI is good for).

IIRC you'll have to. The Knoppix kernel hasn't ACPI compiled in, IIRC.

I can't help you with this one, I'm only using it for half a week or so.
However, I don't think there should be any real problems, especially if
you are no going to use the advanced features. It's things like sleep and
CPU throtteling that are unstable, I think.
