I have experienced the same Prblem: compiling the kernel works ok, put doing a full backup into a tar.gz over nfs powered my thinkpad off after some minutes, also encoding a CD to mp3 powered it off after 4 tracks... When I did the Backup I added 2 external fans to the thinkpad-fan-openings and then it worked fine. So it IS an overheat-shutdown. Today I callled the german IBM-Hotline on that, lets see what they say in germany. I hope there is a simple solution on that...
