i dunno about mandrake, but this looks quite suspicous.
where does the ".gz" come from? is it in /etc/modules? would you mind
deleting the suffix .gz from the usb-modules?
or gzip them in /lib...../usb/ (if loading gzipped modules is supported by
your modutils)?
