Yes, that's how I found out about the source of the problem. After
"make oldconfig", I went into "make menuconfig", and not only were the
ACPI settings gone, they were not available in the menu either until I
activated uniprocessor APIC.

The problem with make-kpgk is basically the same, as make-kpkg ALWAYS
overwrites a previous .config file. When you generate your file with
menuconfig, it says "generated by make menuconfig". Run make-kpkg, and
the .config changes slightly, saying it was "generated by make
config".

That's what I said: It was not true until now. For kernel 2.4.20 you
did not need CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y to configure ACPI, and neither did
you need it for kernel 2.4.21 with the May 22nd ACPI patch.

However, you do need CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y if you applied the June 19th
ACPI patch. I don't know why that is, but it is certainly true in my
experience.

I am not foolish enough to fall for the acronym similarity. But if you
"grep -i" the ACPI patch file for "apic", you will get LOTS of
references to APIC.

Have you tried to configure kernel 2.4.21 with the latest ACPI patch
yourself? I am pretty sure you will get the same results depending on
the APIC setting.
