[ACPI-sppt] standby on asus a7a266

Hi all.  I am trying to get my asus a7a266 motherboard to go into standby.  I 
have flashed the bios to version 1011 (the only other says it updates for 
newer cpus).  I have enabled power management in the BIOS and this is what 
options I can use from userland:

Saturn:/proc/acpi # cat info

states:                  S0 S1 S4 S5

I try to "echo 1 > sleep" and the system seems to hang for anywhere between 
half a second to 5 seconds w/o the monitor DPMS off (it will go into a sleep 
mode if no signal is detected on the VGA line).  Nothing seems to happen if I 
try S4, and the computer turns off when I try S5.  Curiously, when I have my 
modem connected and try S1, and then listen to the line at a handset, the 
tone stays the same (no white noise) as long as the systems seems hung.

Same behavior if I disconnect the modem.  Using the latest patch for kernel 
2.4.22-pre5.  The processor is an AMD Athlon-tbird and I get this about it:

So, bottom line, how can I get this mobo to go into standby?
