I got the same problem with an inspiron. You can blank the screen before standby with
"xset dpms force off" in X11, but this is not really turning off. 
I've done some quick & dirty benchmarks, and power consumption between S1 mode and S0 mode (idle, with good
cpufreq throttling) is nearly the same.
