Latest results: with kernel 2.4.22, if I disable hyperthreading I get
clean shutdowns.  With hyperthreading on, the disks spin down, and the
screen blanks.  The keyboard still wakes the screen and ctrl print
screen prints diagnostics.  The fans are still whirring away.  (I did
see a clean hyperthreading shutdown _once_.)

Time to read up on acpi and kernel hacking...
