Okay, it was a combination of things totally unrelated to MySQL and Apache. First off, we the "problem hostname" that MySQL could not open was one I had never heard of ... "nsql". I've only been with the company about 6 weeks, and it was one developer who finally matched up the sites that were working with the ones that weren't. [ We had previously looked at the wrong page/script as well -- they weren't "localhost" in those cases ] Secondly, I've changed the local /etc/hosts file a couple of times to accomodate things over the last few weeks. That was the _only_ reference to "nsql" that we had, as it was not in our DNS maps (until now). So it was the timing of the /etc/hosts file changes, combined with cache expirations and just the coincidence of changing over DNS servers that threw me off. Putting the name "nsql" hostname back in the /etc/hosts files fixed the issue (and I've now added it to our DNS maps as well). About 15 minutes after I figured all this out, I got an E-mail from Darrell Parlee to double check those /etc/hosts files again. I'm always conscience to keep /etc/hosts files in mind, but I didn't query the development staff enough to joggle their memory on what various hostnames had been used for our more older/original sites. Thanx to everyone (below in alpha-order, maybe I missed a few) who took the time to track down this issue. Especially since I led everyone on a wild goose chase into MySQL.
