apt-get hangs at "Reading Package Lists...66%"

A couple of months ago I made the switch to debian at home but I still admin
some RH machines. Anyhow I'm painfully addicted to apt-get and installed it
on my RH8 machine. Unfortunately I can't get it to work. Basically the
problem is after install I run apt-get update and the "Reading Pacakge
Lists..." message hangs at 66% and apt-get is chewing up 98% CPU. strace
reveals no system calls at all so it's locked a loop with not much going on.
I read how buggy rpm4.1 is and upgraded to rpm 4.2. I've done all the
removing rpm stail locks and rebuilding the database but I still get the
same results. In addition I got rid of multiple glibc's that somehow got
into the system and have removed all other rpm related duplicate packages.
All of which had no impact on the problem whatsoever.

I was hoping someone who's gone through this might be able to offer me some
insight. Sorry if this has been covered but there is *no* search feature of
the linuxmangers email list that I could find.
