Hi again, Thanks go to the following people for their helpful suggestions on what open source tools might be handy for LAN performance analysis & reporting: Sam Morgan suggested STD Knoppix, a bootable Linux CD with an emphasis on information security tools - http://www.knoppix-std.org/). Flavio Prado (suggested ntop, an excellent passive analysis tool which can break down traffic by host, protocol and many other criteria - see http://www.ntop.org/). I also came across the following things which I'd consider to be useful: traffic-vis - http://www.mindrot.org/traffic-vis.html gensink - http://jes.home.cern.ch/jes/gensink/ siphon - http://siphon.datanerds.net/ ethereal - http://www.ethereal.com/ spike proxy - http://www.immunitysec.com/spikeproxy.html dsniff - http://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/ nagios - http://www.nagios.org/ Note all these tools are open source. A few proprietary or commercial based solutions were suggested (eg. Canvas) but I really wanted to stay away from these. Oh, although it remains open source, there is commercial support available for the excellent N-Top - and based on a couple of days trialling it, I'd strongly recommend it. So, thanks to the list for your suggestions!
