Strange Imapd problem

I have a strange problem. I have a mail server,
running redhat 8.0, sendmail, imapd.

A user logged in to check his mail, and the imapd
service for him just froze. There is a service
running under his name, other clients work fine.

I have tried to kill the service by kill -9 process
number, killall -HUP imapd, tried restarting xinetd.
Nothing will kill the process. Is there something I
can try before rebooting the machine, which I do not
what to do?

Server has been running great for months on end, first
problem after almost a year of no problems.

Thanks,
Kevin
