I am running Redhat linux 9.0 upgraded to all current patches on all my
servers. I usually do not print between machines much, but the need arose.

I am able to print from the machine that is hosting the local printer, but I
get pages garbage when I print from a remote server over the net to that
same printer.

I used the printer configuration tool to create a remote printer entry
(Network UNIX LPD) which looks like:

[root@train10-ip83 etc]# cat printcap
# /etc/printcap
#
# DO NOT EDIT! MANUAL CHANGES WILL BE LOST!
# This file is autogenerated by printconf-backend during lpd init.
#
# Hand edited changes can be put in /etc/printcap.local, and will be
included.

printer-at-151:\
        :ml#0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer-at-151:\
        :af=/var/spool/lpd/printer-at-151/printer-at-151.acct:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=train10-ip151:\
        :rp=printer:\
        :lpd_bounce=true:\
        :if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:

#############################################################################
#
## Everything below here is included verbatim from /etc/printcap.local
##
#############################################################################
#
# printcap.local
#
# This file is included by printconf's generated printcap,
# and can be used to specify custom hand edited printers.

[root@train10-ip83 etc]#

If I change the printcap entry to be:

printer-at-151:\
        :ml#0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer-at-151:\
        :af=/var/spool/lpd/printer-at-151/printer-at-151.acct:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=train10-ip151:\
        :rp=printer:

With the above manually adjusted entry I am able to print successfully.

The printcap entry on the machine hosting the local printer is:

[root@train10-ip151 etc]# cat printcap
# /etc/printcap
#
# DO NOT EDIT! MANUAL CHANGES WILL BE LOST!
# This file is autogenerated by printconf-backend during lpd init.
#
# Hand edited changes can be put in /etc/printcap.local, and will be
included.

printer:\
        :ml#0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer:\
        :af=/var/spool/lpd/printer/printer.acct:\
        :sh:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:\
        :lpd_bounce=true:\
        :if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:

#############################################################################
#
## Everything below here is included verbatim from /etc/printcap.local
##
#############################################################################
#
# printcap.local
#
# This file is included by printconf's generated printcap,
# and can be used to specify custom hand edited printers.

[root@train10-ip151 etc]#

Is this a bug with LPRng or Redhats implementation of it?
I can not find a discussion on this.

Thanks,
