xinetd was catching SIGSEGV and failing. Apparently repeatedly with the "10 signals in 1 second" bit. A friend had me look all thru /etc/xinetd.d at every file to make sure they all started with# or service, after reviewing it was the httpd that was causing it to fail. I moved the script, restarted xinet and everything was ok.
