Hello,
I recently updated my kernel on a RedHat 3 ES SMP box using rpm from
2.4.21-9.EL to 2.4.21-15.0.4.EL. I then started to notice the following
error in my logs:
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file
/lib/modules/2.4.21-15.ELsmp/modules.dep (No such file or directory)
I checked the directory and the only was a 2.4.21-15.EL directory so that
explained that error.
I then ran depmod -a 2.4.21-15.0.4.EL and got the following error(s)
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.21-15.0.4.EL/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpuid.o

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.21-15.0.4.EL/kernel/drivers/addon/aep/paep.o
(this goes on for a bit but you get the picture)
I then ran make modules_install and received the following error:
make: *** No rule to make target `modules_install'. Stop.
but then when I checked the /lib/modules directory again I saw there was now
2.4.21-15.0.4.EL 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp 2.4.21-9.EL directories.
To be truthful, with everything that has been going on in my world, I cannot
remember if I restarted the machine the last time I was out at my
datacentre. I usually do not like to restart the machine remotely in case
something happens. IF the machine was not restarted, would this be a cause
for these unresolved symbol errors or is there something else I should be
doing here (or is there something I should not have done) that would have
fixed this?
Finally, I ran depmod -a 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp and received no errors. But
still, when I run modeprobe, I get the error:
Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.21-15.ELsmp/modules.dep
(No such file or directory)
Is this a config error or what? What IS the proper way to upgrade trhe
kernel using RPM so this stuff does not happen?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers
Dave
