SUMMARY: root filesystem almost full

Thanks to Kevin Korb, Pippin Wallace, Calvin Dodge, Steve Sandau, Muhammad 
Kashif Siddiqi, Brett Geer DHL-ZA, Leigh Brown, Neil Dombrowski,  Steve 
Sandau, Dragi Raos, Wayne Goodrich, and Madhu Muchalambkar for the replies.

  1) Consensus was that 1GB for /usr is pretty normal.
  2) Another common remark was that /dev is a favorite spot for crackers to 
hide files <<gulp>>

Neil Dombrowski, Steve Sandau, Madhu Muchalambkar and Dragi Raos nailed it 
right on the head:

  3) It was my backup cron script writing to the wrong tape device name so I 
ended up with a huge tar file in the /dev dir that looked like the name of 
my tape drive.

I found the file with a useful command from Neil:

   du -sk * |sort -n

Also Leigh Brown proposed a simmilar command that does the same thing:

   ls -lrS

Here's what I found:
