SUMMARY: High (system) CPU usage

Thanks to all those who responded. Some suggested using top, which if 
the usage were by a user process would show up.
The high usage was from the system (i.e. top output: CPU states:   6.9% 
user,  40.3% system,   0.2% nice,  52.6% idle)
It was suggested to use vmstat and/or iostat to determine where the 
excessive CPU usage is going. vmstat displayed
the follow:

the cs field show a very high amount of context switching. Now that 
I've discovered what (I think) is taking up the time, I must figure out 
how (or if) I can reduce it. I'm running VMware GSX 3.1 on a Dell 2550 
2x1ghz 2gb ram
