[Bug 103] X Windows chooses invalid refresh rate/resolution after install

I incremented the options downward until the only settings available for X11 to choose from were for 640x480, 256 colors, 60Hz. The system still seemed to be attempting the same refresh rate no matter what was selected. Finally, I substituted another monitor, a standard SuperVGA. However, the same trouble persisted, with an obvious refresh rate problem. Any ideas you have would be welcome.
