[Bug 103] X Windows chooses invalid refresh rate/resolution after install

In order to put this to an end, I swapped out video cards. The video card
installed was a Diamond Stealth. Old, but working perfectly. 
Another run through xf86setup, setting everything for plain 640x480, 256 color
and another reboot. 
Now X11 will not start. The system endlessly tries to start X, but appears to be
stuck. Every so often I see the text login screen flicker up on the screen as
the hard drive thrashes away. 
I appear to be missing something altogether here. I am not really new to Linux,
and this system has had two other distros on it recently with no X11 problems. 
As before, any help you can give me would be appreciated.
