Thanks for responding, Logan. I had tried that boot command as well. The
result was different: The boot did not stop at "acpi_pci_link_calc_penalties",
but continued and instead stopped with the message that no root was specified
(I forget the exact words) and a suggest to add a "root="(something) to the
boot command. The "noapic" part seemed to make no difference one way or the
other. I was only able to get a successful boot by specifying "linux acpi=off
root=/dev/hdc" (where /dev/hdc is my cdrom).

Is there a "root=" I could enter to run the installer??

Although my machine may not be fast enough for decent performance at all, the
issue may apply to others, as hinted by the instructions on the boot screen to
handle acpi problems (that don't seem to work).

I have also verified the exact same difficulty with Alpha 10.
