Hi, When trying to install ARK Linux alpha 1.2 The full error messages are as follows: mtrr: base(0xf4000000) is not aligned on a size(0x0000) boundery Creating mouse: Auto kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s-k char-major-4, errno = 2 kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s-k char-major-4, errno = 2 Warning: Unable to open /dev/hdc r ad-write (Read- nly file system). /dev/hdc has been opened read-only. Error: Unable to open /dev/hdc - unrecognised disk label. A bug has been detected in gnu parted. Please email a bug report to [email protected] containing the version (1.6.12) and following message:Assertion (disk != NULL) at disk.c: 1037 in function ped_disk_partition() failed. installer exited. Installer failed (exited on signal): 0 That was it. The computer froze and had to hit the reset button to reboot. Though I'm not a Linux expert, I am past the newbie stage. I tried to find other ways to install. I created a 1gig partition on hda7, booted up in Gentoo on hdb1, copied the the contents of the Ark installation cd to hda7. After the cd had copied, I chrooted into hda7 and ran the installer manually. The installer ran without any error messages, up to the partitioning screen, where the Express install was disabled (as it also was installing from CD). I didn't want the first option to take over the whole drive, so I opted for the Parallel install. This then presented me with another screen with a message saying it couldn't find any Dos or Windows installations (which is correct), and an option to Express install. I clicked the Express install button only to be taken back to the previous screen with the Express install option still disabled, only this time with a message saying it couldn't find any unallocated space on my hard drive, and that it needed a minimum of 2gig. I have about 17gig of unallocated space on hda, which once allocated would become hda8. I have seen other similar bug reports with different versions of Ark Linux, but none have the CD (/dev/hdc or even /dev/hdd my DVD drive) error. My system comprises: Asus A7V8X-X motherboard AMD AthlonXP 2200+ cpu Crucial 256Mb DDR 2100 memory IBM 60Gb harddrive (hda) Maxtor 20Gb harddrive (hdb) Samsung 52x32x52 CDRW (hdc) Artek 16x DVDROM (hdd) Nvidia MX420 64Mb graphics card Soundblaster PCI64 sound card CTX PR705F 17" monitor hda1 = Xandros 2.0 hda5 = CDwriter scratch disk hda6 = Slackware 10 hda7 = ArkLinux installation files (hda8) = unallocated space 17Gb hdb1 = Gentoo 2004-2 hdb5 = swap hdb6 = MepisLinux Why all the different distros? Xandros is my main os. Slackware just to try out. Gentoo for learning purposes. Mepis just to try out. I will carry on trying to get ArkLinux installed, even if it's on an old machine resurected from the attic. Bye for now. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks broose.
