Sorry it's taken forever to reply to this.  Apparently netscape thinks 
that you and JScott are spammers :D  Rescued this from the junk mail pile.

As always, the camel book from O'Reilly & Assoc.  is a great reference.  
The perl man pages are also very good.  You should be able to use those 
to 'interpret' somebody's existing perl code and understand it.. then 
I'd try writing a few sample scripts using an existing script as a 
template.  If you're already familiar with other programming languages 
and/or script languages, it should go fairly quickly.
