It's the sort of data manipulation problem that programmers are supposed to handle as a matter of routine. One that could be an 'easy' exercise in the first volume of Donald Knuth's 'The Art of Computer Programming' [1]. And yes, I do expect programmers to have a basic knowledge of data structures, fundamental algorithms and commplexity analysis. What else makes one a programmer ?
