In fact, many sysadmins explicitly *disable* version 1 of the protocol 
on their servers.  So having a (fast) version 1 client may at the very 
least bar your access to some servers.  Like spot said, there is a fix 
for this (via OpenSSL) which is preferable to the workaround.
