I agree with the lack of need for this, and with your suspicion.
Basicly, there are two cases where Protocol 2 is unbearably slow:
1) you're on sun4c
2) you're using a binary for sun4c.
If 1, Protocol 1 is going to suck too, and a lot.
If 2, get the v8 bin.
Either way, I think we do an extreme disservice to recommend using
Protocol 1, especially given that it's got known vulnerabilities.
