Sorry, misunderstanding - I'm actually sitting in front of the
machine, i.e. with monitor and keyboard. The strange thing is just
that the text mode *on the monitor* looks as if it was running via
serial console, i.e. black and white, no graphics (well, bad ASCII
graphics) and suchlike. Monitor and keyboard were connected right from
the start, so the U5 should have had no reason to believe it was
running via serial.

Ah, interesting, thanks! Looks a bit like overkill compared to plain
ol' gv, but on the other hand it uses gtk themes, which makes it look
nicer with WindowMaker... :-) Just a pity that you seem to *have* to
install Gnome to do just about anything these days... :-/
