I experienced the same thing (except for the bad CD part).  I tried the 
most recent version of Aurora Linux (2.98?) on a Sun Ultra 30 and the 
performance was terrible.  So poor in fact that I had to wipe it out and 
go back to Aurora 1.0.   The latter performs much better (fast and more 
stable) than 2.98.   I may give Aurora 2.98 another try after it is 
officially released.
